Dermatologists Warn: Sunscreen Myths Are Dangerous

Experts urge using SPF 30 sunscreen to protect skin and debunk false social media claims

Dermatologists are sounding the alarm as social media influencers spread dangerous myths about sun exposure. Dr. Raman Madan, Director of Cosmetic Dermatology at Northwell Health, is setting the record straight. Despite claims that sunscreen causes cancer, Dr. Madan insists it's crucial for protection.

If you're concerned about chemical absorption, he recommends mineral sunscreens with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. Another dangerous myth? The "base tan." Dr. Madan says this only provides about SPF 3 protection while increasing cancer risk and accelerating aging. The truth is, moderate sun exposure is beneficial for vitamin D and mood, but protection is essential.

For most people, SPF 30 is sufficient, blocking 97% of harmful rays when reapplied every few hours. With skin cancer affecting 1 in 5 Americans and most melanoma cases linked to UV exposure, the science is clear - each sunburn increases your cancer risk. Don't let social media influence your health decisions.
