66-Year-Old Lawyer Defies Odds to Keep Running

After a shocking heart diagnosis, Les Jones proves age and illness can't stop his passion for ultramarathons

This 66-year-old lawyer runs 100-mile races, until a routine physical changed everything. Les Jones discovered running as a teenager to reduce stress, never imagining it would become his lifelong passion. For over two decades, the Memphis medical malpractice attorney has completed multiple 100-mile ultramarathons each year. Then came the shocking diagnosis – an enlarged aorta and an undetected aortic aneurysm.

His wife immediately said, "No more 100-mile races until someone says it's okay." Determined to continue, Jones sought specialized care at Cleveland Clinic, where Dr. Singh discovered something remarkable – his dedicated training actually helped keep his condition stable. The aorta hadn't grown in three years. With medical approval, Jones attempted the grueling Cocodona 250 in May 2025, though back issues stopped him at 40 miles. His most meaningful achievement? Crossing the finish line of a 100-mile race with his 18-year-old son. Jones firmly believes "Movement is medicine" and plans to run as long as his body allows – proving age and diagnosis don't define what's possible.
