Republicans seek to ban federal funding for transgender animal experiments in 2026 budget.
House Republicans are requesting a ban on federally funded transgender animal experiments in the 2026 budget. Led by Representative Paul Gosar, nine GOP lawmakers including Marjorie Taylor Greene and Lauren Boebert sent a letter to key appropriations committee leaders. They're demanding language prohibiting funding for research that alters animals to no longer correspond with their biological sex.
According to the letter, dozens of NIH grants under the Biden administration funded experiments to create "transfeminine" and "transmasculine" lab animals using invasive surgeries and hormone therapies. These animals were then subjected to wounding, shocking, and injections with street drugs.
President Trump has personally criticized these experiments and his administration has already cut over $1 million in funding. However, the White Coat Waste Project, a government watchdog group, reports that 29 active taxpayer-funded grants for transgender animal tests still remain. Republicans argue this ban would ensure taxpayers aren't forced to foot the bill for what they call "wasteful and cruel" experiments.
